A New Year, New Forms: Welcoming the Year Ahead in Clay -
A new year always brings a quiet sense of possibility. Clean calendars, fresh ideas, and the invitation to begin again. In the studio, this feeling is especially tangible —hands in clay, tools laid out and endless forms waiting to be shaped.
At Wedge Ceramics Wales the start of the year is less about resolutions and more about intention. Clay teaches us that progress isn’t rushed. It’s built slowly, patiently, one thoughtful movement at a time and I myself have gone from being a 100 mile an hour person to someone who can slow down, breath and take each day as it comes. I have some personal plans for 2026 that will see me focus on other areas of ceramics and goals I have wanted to achieve for some time which I am very excited about!
Reflecting on the Year That Shaped Me - 2025 -
The past year was filled with creative exploration, learning curves, beautiful surprises and moments of shared focus around the worktable. Every sculpture - finished or not taught me something and also my clients too. Every firing carried a little risk and a lot of hope that the kiln gods would be kind, as they can be terribly unpredictable but when mistakes happen we just try again.
I am so grateful for my little ceramic community of makers in Bridgend, Aberdare and Treorchy : beginners who touched clay for the first time, more experienced sculptors pushing their practice further and choosing to join me in a ceramic workshop, and everyone who walked through the door curious and open to creating. Also to the charities, team wellbeing days, events and craft groups within South Wales that have invited me to their premises - Thank you for choosing me!

Why the New Year Is a Perfect Time to Work with Clay -
The beginning of the year is an ideal moment to start (or return to) a creative practice. Sculpting offers something many of us crave more of:
Slowness in a fast world
Focus without screens
Tangible progress you can feel in your hands
Creative confidence that grows with practice
Clay doesn’t demand perfection. It invites experimentation, mistakes, and play—qualities we can carry into the rest of the year.
What’s Coming This Year -
As we step into the months ahead, I am excited to offer:
New sculpture workshops and after school kids club classes .
A new home studio where I hope to be able to host small private workshops or one to one classes.
Special themed sessions focused on form, texture, and surface.
Whether your goal is to learn a new skill, deepen an existing practice, or simply make space for creativity, I’d love to support that journey. You can pop me an email on wedgeceramics@gmail.com for more info or to discuss any ideas you may have!
An Invitation -
If you’ve been feeling the pull to make something with your hands as a new hobby for 2026 , consider this your sign. Come shape, carve, build and explore with me. Let my beginners ceramic workshops in South Wales be a place where time slows down and ideas take form. You will also make new friends and have a lovely ceramic piece of art to take home and cherish forever.
Here’s to a year of curiosity, creativity, and clay-covered hands.
Happy New Year,
Gem
